I wrote this post 16 months ago, and it's nice to revisit this from a fresh perspective. Firstly, I'd like to say that the nature of this topic wasn't really a personal critique of Neville Brody; but more of the idea that an anonymous vote would yield different results than one which people were held accountable for their opinions.

Thank you Daniel for letting me know that the videos of this lecture are available online... it's interesting to revisit part of the lecture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc1Z6HRyl4U).

After re-reading my own comments judging someone else based on a loose presentation in a forced environment, I would like to say that I really have no basis to form an opinion on whether Neville Brody is a Genius or a Wanker, but perhaps this is the lesson I was supposed to learn. When forced to make a choice between A) or B), we also have the choice of C) which is to not make a choice or D) to choose something completely different altogether.

I watched this lecture on the web and must say that I disagree. As Julie has said his work is significant and I think that he has done well to keep himself composed and keep his 'normal guy' attitude, his work has become famous across the globe and it is great to see that a designer can continue to create great work and keep his attitude and ego under control; This in itself is Genius behaviour.

Have you read this book? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dumbing-Down-Curriculum-Compulsory-Schooling/dp/0865714487

I think it would interest you, especially as an intelligent, creative thinker with school-aged kids in your life. About a quarter of the book revolves around the difference between networks and communities and why it's so problematic that we ("we" being western culture, that favorite punching bag of people who haven't read enough Derrida [and I'm including myself in that snarky parenthetical]) have essentially traded the latter for the former. It's a very good read, even if you don't end up agreeing with the author's proposed remedies.

Having just been mauled by a bunch of anonymous teenage Neville Brody wannabees in the Creative Review blog for daring to comment on his underwhelming style of lecturing I found your post very interesting. I acknowledge that his design work has been significant, but ouch this lecture sounds as bad as the one I went to two years previously. Though having just been the target of cyber-bullying it's shocking a)how unpleasant perfect strangers can be to you at the flick of the enter key and b) how upsetting it is. Having subsequently worked out that a great deal of cyber-bullying is carried out by young gormless kids (you only have to look at u-tube to see what I mean) I appreciate that most of them are too naive to work out the impact they have on their victims.

I had a friend who only just started to engage in social networking, right at the same time as I decided to quit. This, combined with the ability to look over my girlfriends shoulder whilst she browses her little status feed; provides me with a constant reminder that I did the right thing.

It's now been two months of abstinence, and so far I may have missed out on seeing some pictures or websites. On the plus side, I've spent more time with real humans than I have in the past year, and have funnelled my freed-up time into developing a creative AI machine. Who knows what 'you' could be doing with all those extra minutes.

Hey, just stopping by to say thanks for the post. Seems like I'm not the only one with growing repulsion toward the "new" internet aka Web 2.0. Good luck on your way, I'm giving myself another week before I decide to delete all this digital nonsense, although I already know the outcome.

Assigning an impropper name to something doesn't make it any more real than the act of not acknkowledging a thing make it less real.

You didn't realize that the said "terrorist" was a mother or a father, yet that thing existed. You considered them a terrorist and that thing did not exist.

Determination does not make a thing what it is as information is not a judgement. There are several real things. The judgement happens in your head, and not all judges are fine judges.

Perhaps this is more of a concept of classification of perception. Words are convenience and help us to communicate ideas. Words work because we either agree on them, they are intuative and instructive, or they are forced upon us early enough to hold in place. We all agree that there are "boys" and "girls" though there is no "boy" and none of them are exactly alike - only similar.

The "reality" of a "terrorist" is not possible to see because it is a perfect idea and there is no perfect example.

Imagination is not reality, it is lie. Lies can be useful, however, as they are a tool.

All of us walk around with a universe of perspective inside of our blood. As entertaining as it is to pick and choose what we hold inside of our universe - determining that fiction rules your world is only as useful as reaction from the things outisde of your imagination that it can motivate.

I hope that you're thankful that your body can still elicit such reactions from the world you think inside of. Such fanciful thoughts are a convenience that do not come to every animal.

When driving, rather than paying attention to the road... like most people, I like to contemplate the ridiculous contradictions of time travel. It's starting to feel like a strangely human concept, like trying to put together the pieces of a puzzle that end up not being jigsaw pieces, but just a few scraps of paper that you found at the bottom of your bin.

Although space travel is a concept that seems within the capabilities of nature. Instead of helping grow Lili to build a space vehicle, maybe I'll help Lili help her children, help their children, help their children, help their cyborg offspring develop baby cyborgs that work towards the goal of perfecting the mess of space travel that humans will have been failing at for the next few centuries.

Will Sapolsky suffice? A move toward a perception-centered workaround if not an actual biological reworking...http://www.amazon.com/Why-Zebras-Dont-Get-Ulcers/dp/0716732106Consciousness can actually be the hero, believe it or not. I have seen many women overcome 20-40 years of negative cultural conditioning and misfiring adrenaline/corticoid responses and go on to have painless, relaxed labor and birth, purely by way of conscious decision to reprogram their perception. It can happen.

If you take my obsession with electronic music, for example, it was not one but a handful of rewarding experiences each of which built upon the last to form my passion. It's the only lasting passion I've had. But as for how long it will last, who knows.

According to my hypothesis, you'll keep that obsession for as long as you keep getting rewarded for it. Which seems like it would leave the responsibility for your passion in the hands of...

1. You; to deliver your music to the people who will respond well to it.
2. Fate (or rather my belief that the set of events which make up each persons individual behavioural patterns); to respond with either positive or negative, depending on whether it wishes you to continue along this path.

Think of Fate as your game of Domino Rally, and you are the cat that decides if and when to step in and change the direction of the game.
